Court zones explained
The key (the paint). The rectangle under each basket — 16 ft wide in the NBA, 4.9 m in FIBA. Offensive players cannot camp inside it for more than 3 seconds.
The three-point arc. In the NBA it runs 23 ft 9 in from the center of the rim, flattening to 22 ft in the corners. FIBA uses 6.75 m (6.60 m corners), and U.S. high school 19 ft 9 in.
The free-throw line. 15 ft from the backboard at every level, from high school to the NBA. Free throws are worth 1 point.
The center circle. Where the opening jump ball takes place — 12 ft in diameter in the NBA, 3.6 m in FIBA.
The restricted area. A small arc under the rim (4 ft radius in the NBA) inside which defenders cannot draw charging fouls.
Surface and materials
Competition courts use hardwood (maple parquet) indoors; outdoor courts are typically asphalt or concrete, often with acrylic or modular sport tiles. Both the NBA and FIBA require a hard, flat, uniform surface.
